FCC Timeline for Low Power Community Radio

 The FCC has not officially announced their timeline for licensing new low-power community radio stations. However, based on our experience with the FCC, we can predict the following schedule, which is subject to change:

NOW

FCC determining where open channels will be for new stations

Fall 2011

FCC proposes rules for community radio application process

Winter 2011-2012

FCC opens public comments process for community radio rulemaking

Spring 2012

FCC rules are finalized; low power community radio application published

Fall 2012

FCC filing window for low power community radio opens.  Applications are due!

Late 2012-2013

FCC awards construction permits to groups with no competing applications.

2013-2016

FCC announces competing groups.

Modification and settlement period.
FCC chooses winners from remaining competitions and grants construction permits.

2013-2018

New LPFM stations are built.

Groups have 18 months after construction permit is granted to get on the air.
