About LPFM Leadership Days

LPFM Leadership days are 3 days of action- jam packed with trainings, lobbying, street theater, media work, FCC visits, strategizing, movement building and dancing with folks who are fighting for better community media. The people attending will be coming from all over the country and representing already existing Low-Power FM radio stations, or are part of groups that would like to have an opportunity to get an LPFM. Many organizations are parts of larger struggles for economic and social justice, and recognize the crucial role that media plays in this work.

Goals:

The Goals of LPFM Leadership Days are to:

  1. Demonstrate popular support for Expanding Low-Power FM, and make sure that legislators, the Media, and FCC Commissioners hear our voices,
  2. Build and strengthen our movements by connecting media justice and grassroots community groups from across the country around the importance of community media as a tool for social change,
  3. To make an impact on the legislative process that currently determines the future of LPFM, and advance the legislation towards passage
  4. Through lobbying get 50 cosponsors in the House (we currently have 38) and 10 in the Senate (we currently have 5) on the LPFM Bill
  5. In organizing to win- we must begin to strategize for the post-victory next steps, and strategize for the upcoming filing window for new LPFM licenses

Strategy: Our voices will be heard

There has been nearly a decade of groundwork laid bringing us to this point so close to victory. After years of fighting unfair legislation in Congress and waging uphill battles against the Big Broadcasters- the LPFM radio community has refused to be silenced. Thousands of people across the country have called their Congressional Representative, signed postcards, written letters, and sent emails. Community organizations nationwide have introduced City Council Resolutions in support of expanding LPFM. A resolution just passed in Urbana-Champaign, Hartford and an LPFM resolution hearing in Boston is on the horizon. An enormous and diverse coalition has formed in favor of expanding this important service. LPFM is non-controversial, and bi-partisan- its supporters are as diverse and eclectic as the average programming at community LPFM stations.

We are tired of waiting for Congress to take action, so we are taking action.
