While the countries of the Global North have great material abundance and a dizzying array of new communications technologies, much of the world continues to rely upon radio for information, discussion, and entertainment. While the community radio is a growing movement in the United States, providing listeners an alternative to the monopolized and corporately-owned media, internationally community radio plays a much larger and central role in the way citizens acquire the information that shapes the political and cultural climates of their regions. Prometheus Radio Project is facilitator--not a funder--of international projects, and we have conducted many sorts of workshops and trainings internationally. Past workshops have covered topics such as elementary physical concepts in radio, the social and political history and practice of community radio, community station governance, audio production, antenna building, and so forth. One of our favorite workshops involves using electronic parts to build a working transmitter, with groups that have never even used a soldering iron before! We can also help construct a whole full station while we are there, depending on the needs of the host group and available funding. We have held these events in Tanzania, Venezuela, Guatemala and other countries. International Workshops Past workshops have covered topics such as elementary physical concepts in radio, the social and political history and practice of community radio, community station governance, audio production, antenna building, and so forth. Click here to check out some descriptions of our most popular workshops! We are often asked what we use, and where we get it, for building simple radio stations. While it varies from project to project, we prefer to build stations largely with locally available materials - materials that are easy to find again if something breaks, needs expansion, or demands replacement. Read more about our approach to obtaining equipment for international projects. Prometheus Radio Project technicians and trainers joined forces with the United African Alliance Community Center in Imbaseni Village near Arusha, Tanzania, to build a radio station for the UAACC! Pete and Charlotte O'Neal are former Black Panthers who fled COINTELPRO repression in the 1960s, and settled in Tanzania. They run the UAACC, a vibrant community center in Imbaseni Village, that provides services to local residents, including a computer center, a free school, a recording studio for local musicians, and now, a low power radio station! Read about the project, the O'Neals, and the sister station relationship between the UAACC and Valley Free Radio!
