Four Utah Valley college students recently traveled to Namibia to start a podcast program for a community radio station -- the first of its kind in the African nation, according to UVU.

The team included Utah Valley University students Emily Hedrick, Brittney Asper, Mary Lynn Lunden; Brigham Young University student Whitney Ransom; and Namibia native Vicky Matjila, who is a student at Polytechnic of Namibia, according to a UVU press release.

The project started when the UVU digital media department and the Polytechnic of Namibia started working on the Digital Namibian Archive Project, which is a program for digital imaging and digitizing Namibian images, documents, films and books from the national archives.

Before they left for Namibia, the students raised money and got supplies for Katutura Community Radio, according to the press release. They were able to get a used iMac and other necessary equipment to produce podcasts. The team worked with the staff at the radio station, training them and helping them with the podcast production, according to UVU. They created a template, models, album art and a manual for the radio station staff.

Hedrick and Asper will give a presentation about the project at the New Media Expo, which is Thursday through Saturday in Las Vegas.
