Radio station will give voice to the foothills

Our view: If KKRN successfully sprouts, it will be a priceless asset.

What is the honest homegrown voice of the Shasta County foothills?

Hard to say. It's a lot country, a little hippie, a little Indian. It's certainly independent and opinionated enough that we're talking not about one voice, but a lively party with guests shouting at each other across the room.

Whatever it is, it will soon be amplified and broadcast for anyone with an FM radio.

Acorn Community Enterprises in Round Mountain has won a noncommercial radio license and is building plans for a station, KKRN on 88.5 FM, reaching from Hatchet Mountain down to east Redding.

What will be on the air? That's up in the air.

Acorn's Staci Wadley said possibilities include news, weather, fire and air-quality alerts, political talk, barter shows, music -- the point is to be by and for the community. "We have this obnoxious pink suggestion box, and we're just asking people, 'What do you want out of your radio station?'"

The box will be deployed at a Father's Day morning pancake breakfast at the Round Mountain Community Center. The event is both a fundraiser and a straw poll. Take a breakfast plate; leave a programming tip.

The challenges of starting and running a radio station on a nonprofit's budget are substantial. There'll be duct tape and dead air along the way.

But if KKRN successfully sprouts and takes root, it will be a priceless asset for its region. We wish the founders luck and clear signals, and we encourage foothill residents to pitch in and help make their voice heard.
