Our Fourth Barnraising - KYRS-LP in Spokane, Washington
The Thin Air Radio Project Hits the Airwaves in Downtown Spokane!

Spokane Barnraising

The Thin Air Radio Project boasts an incredibly diverse group of organizers, and one of the strongest volunteer bases at any community radio station in the country. A sister station to robust Seattle community radio station KBCS, KYRS brings world music, public affairs, international progressive news, and lots of locally grown entertainment to this regional capital for eastern Washington, Idaho, and Montana.

KYRS is housed in an amazing, beautifully finished community center, that also holds a cooperative global folk art bazaar, a neighborhood alliance group, and a community law firm. This space, located right in the middle of downtown Spokane, allows the station to have a physical footprint as strong and vibrant as the one they make over the air.

The volunteers in Spokane held an amazing conference. Local restaurants donated food and serving implements for every meal, and local singer/songwriter Jessica Skalitalia performed haunting, beautiful music. Hundreds of volunteers, including veterans of unlicensed projects in Austin, Texas; Los Angeles, California, and Seattle, Washington, came together and designed and built this brand new station in a series of beautiful rooms.

The training teams couldn't keep up with the scores of volunteers who wanted to learn audio production, news gathering, automation, and the fabulous ins and outs of raising a tower and tuning a transmitter.
