11 Things YOU Can Do To Help Prometheus:1) Host an event with Prometheus! The staff, board, and volunteers of the Prometheus Radio Project love to travel, and spread the good word about community radio and what it can do! We've spoken at colleges, coffee shops, demonstrations, living rooms; even conservative think tanks like the CATO Institute! Invite us to your town, and we can talk about a number of topics, including but certainly not limited to:
Depending on what you need, we can often stay for a day or two and schedule as many events as reason allows. A typical day in a Prometheus visit might involve: Most of Prometheus Radio Project's services are free. When we travel, we ask that you find us a place to sleep for overnight stays, and we often pass the hat for donations when speaking at a public events. We sell books and tee shirts and will gladly accept tax-deductible donations to keep us going. If your organization is a school or other institutional setting and we are giving a lecture or teaching a class, we ask for an honorarium if possible to support our work. We never turn anyone away for lack of funds, though requests that help us pay our costs are given priority. 2) Help the news of Prometheus' spread like wildfire- Put one of our articles or announcements in your newsletter, on your website or radio station! Choose from articles, neat-o graphics, syndicated web content, linking buttons, public service announcements and much more! . Anything on our website is free for pilfering as long as the source is credited and our website is linked. All kinds of incredible sound files are availablehere! And don't forget to check out our news archive! Prometheus is continually developing materials to promote the movement for better media and help low power radio stations learn their trade. You can help us keep our website up to date and make our literature more eye friendly! Contact Hannah to learn how you can help. 4) Take on a research project! Put down that copy of Jane Eyre! Prometheus has lots of captivating and weird research projects that will provide you with something more interesting to think about than the latest Baywatch episode. Research can cover mostly anything, however recurring topics include: 5) Contribute financially! Yes, like all other non-profit organizations, Prometheus needs money. If you have some you can spare, please consider sending it to us. So far, we've made a giant difference on a fraction of the budget of many other groups. There are a lot of places where it is impossible to get a low power radio station under the current rules- but it can't hurt to check! Our goal is to make community radio possible everywhere, so check in with us if LPFM is possible where you are. If it is possible, start a group or recruit an existing organization to hold the next community radio license for your town! 7) Got Mad Skillz? We need them! Do you have a passion? Can you make Tee-shirts? Start non-profits? Fix computers or turntables? Help groups with conflict resolution? Write legal contracts? Whistle while chewing gum? Let us know, because we need your help! Our organization is driven by the talents of our volunteers, and we're always looking for those special people that can help us by doing the things they love. 8) Help a nearby low power radio station! Even if you can't start a station in your town now, there's probably a nearby station that could use your help. We can put you in touch with low power stations and you can get a first hand view of what a town with community radio can look like by helping one out. 9) Come to a Radio Barnraising! Come witness the birth of a new LPFM! Our radio barnraisings happen all over the country, where we assist in the development and construction of brand new stations. Come out and lend a hand laying those transmission lines, take in some workshops, or just contribute your constant witty radio banter while watching others do the heavy lifting. 10) Sign up to be kept in the loop! Though we are based in a basement in Philadelphia, we work around the country and sometimes the world. We never know when we might need a couch to sleep on in Iowa, a local volunteer to organize a hearing in San Antonio, or a persuasive citizen to contact their senator in Alaska. If you sign up, we will know that we have a friend in your town when we need one! 11) Donate stuff! We love clutter, especially when it involves any of the following: Radio equipment, decent computers and peripherals, office furniture, snacks for our volunteers, specialized radio books, unidentifiable electronics. Remember, Non-Profit = Tax Deduction. |
