RADIO PROJECT JOIN
THE STRUGGLE FOR COMMUNITY ACCESS TO THE AIRWAVES The Prometheus Radio Project, a nonprofit activist organization based in West Philadelphia, is seeking savvy, organized and self-directed interns with a love of activism and an interest in community media starting in May of 2008. About Prometheus: Prometheus is a grassroots organization that works to expand and protect community radio and promote a more democratic media in the United States and around the world. We see radio stations as tools for social justice organizing, and we also advocate and organize to create more opportunities for community radio We help civil society groups navigate the radio licensing process and provide technical assistance in building radio stations. We also advocate in Congress and at the FCC to protect community radio, and actively participate in the broader campaign for a better media. Learn more at http://www.prometheusradio.org.
About Our Internships: Our internships are a great opportunity to learn the nuts and bolts of political and grassroots organizing and learn about radio and media justice activism. Our interns have a good deal of responsibility and self-direction within the campaigns they are working on, and we are very open to giving interns the opportunity to take leadership in orgazining. All interns are also responsible for some routine office work. We offer a stipend, or course credit. Work-study students are welcome. Available Internships: FM Radio Policy We are looking for an intern to help us work to protect low power community radio stations from being knocked off the air by large commercial broadcasters. This internship includes grassroots outreach to mobilize low power stations nationwide to advocate for themselves at the FCC, as well as research to inform our policy work and negotiations with the FCC.
Political Organizing One of our biggest campaigns right now is passing legislation that would significantly expand Low Power FM service for community groups all across the country, introducing thousands more locally owned and programmed stations into communities. We are looking for an intern to help us with this effort. The internship would include grassroots organizing, research about representatives and their district, trips to DC to meet with congressional offices about the issue.
Development & Communication We are looking for an intern to work with our Director of Development and Communications on the various projects that keep our organization afloat financially and maintain good communication about what we are doing with our various constituents, allies and all those who care about community radio. Projects include production of the Prometheus newsletter, fundraising and assisting low power stations with funding advise.
Technical Services We need folks to help us 'fix it all!'. Our Technical Service intern will assist in maintaining all of our office infrastructure (phones, printers, computers) as well as our Virtual Prometheus systems (file server, network, etc). This position will also give you a chance to develop some of the technical skills needed to build and maintain a radio station.
