KMUD Problem Solving Procedure

With three transmitters in operation, KMUD serves several counties in Northwestern California. KMUD is owned and operated by Redwood Community Radio, Inc. a non-profit corporation. We've been broadcasting since May 28, 1987. Our programming (90% of which is produced locally) includes music of all kinds (roughly 75% of airtime); news of the region and beyond; public affairs and call-in talk shows. KMUD is composed of over one hundred and twenty volunteer programmers and six full-time staff.

PROBLEM SOLVING PROCEDURE

 Updated with Board Approval 12/16/1997

Step 1:
Before seeking action from either the Personnel Committee or
Mediation, staff and volunteers should seek resolution of their
dissatisfaction by informal discussion directly with the other people
involved.

Step 2:
When an informal discussion does not resolve the problem, the next
step is to speak with the immediate supervisor within the department
effected, ie) Programming problems go to the Programming Director;
difficulties with a specific category of programming should go to the
department head. If the problem is with another programmer or staff,
the Station Management should be contacted. Mediation is also offered
if the parties involved so request.

Step 3:
Contact one of the three Staff Representatives to the Board of
Directors.

Step 4:
If none of the above steps resolve the difficulty, the Personnel
Committee should be contacted, and the Committee will hear all sides of
the issue and will render a decision in a timely manner.

Step 5:

If the decision of the Personnel Committee does not resolve the
problem, the Board of Directors should be informed, and the Board will
take whatever action is deemed appropriate.

If there exists a problem in communicating with one’s immediate
supervisor, the Personnel Committee may be contacted directly- after
Step 1 has been taken.

All requests for formal resolution of grievances must be made within 30
days of the originating incidence, unless vacations or unforeseen
situations arise which could postpone the timely hearing.

To avoid conflict of interest, Personnel Committee members with close
ties to either aggrieved parties, or if directly involved in the issue under
consideration, will excuse themselves from proceedings. Other potential
members may excuse themselves on any basis.
