The Answer

There are two main hurdles for most people thinking about applying for a LPFM. One is to find a location where the transmitter and antenna can be. You must have permission to use this location, and it must meet the FCC requirements for distance from other radio stations on the same or adjacent frequencies.

The application must be submitted in the filing window, but you can go there and work on it right now. You read the instructions, go to the login page, and set up an "account" and choose a password. Then you can work on the application anytime (today, tomorrow, whenever). The only thing that happens during the filing window is that you go back into the account, with your already completed application, and click "submit." I recommend starting very soon, because you may run into some unexpected detail (for example, the mailing address of a board member, or your height above seal level) that will take you a couple of days of phone tag with someone to clear up. It doesn't take very long if you have all the answers.
