The Prometheus Radio Project builds,
supports, and advocates for community radio stations that bring
together and empower local, participatory voices and movements for
social change. To that end, Prometheus strives to: demystify
technologies; illuminate the political process that governs access to
our media system; and demonstrate the powerful effects of media on
our lives and our communities!
Programs We serve as a community resource center. We offer legal, technical, and organizational support for non-commercial community broadcasters. Prometheus staff have developed a number of primers to help neighborhood stations apply for a license, start up, and operate. We act as a clearinghouse for those who need technical assistance, and maintain mailing lists to keep people informed of news in the micro-radio movement. We organize radio building conferences. Just as neighbors in rural communities gathered to build a barn, we bring people together to build LPFM stations. We call the events "Radio Barn-raisings," and they are designed to educate, inspire, and build momentum for the media democracy movement. We build radio stations. When groups don't need the fuss of 150 volunteers coming to town we will do the work on a contract basis. We have built stations for Native Tribes, immigrant communities, and others. We sponsor and produce educational materials on micro-radio and media democracy issues. These take the form of workshops, tours, events, and literature. We advocate for the public. We work on radio related issues including media ownership, spectrum reform, and facilitate public participation in the FCC rule making process.
