The July Prometheus Radio Broadcast is in. This summer is shaping up to be an exciting time for community radio, with significant strides being made in the campaign to expand Low Power FM. However, there is still a lot be done. We are working hard to mobilize support to pass the Low Power Community Radio Act and we need your help, so please consider donating today so we can continue our fight!


Summer of Action: National Call-in Day and Meetings for Low Power Radio

Temperatures are rising, and the Prometheus Campaign Team is getting ready to turn up the heat on Congress! Before members of Congress head back to their home states for the August recess, we will let them know that the unfair restrictions on Low Power FM radio must go! 

On Monday, July 20th, communities across the country will be taking part in the National Call-in Day by contacting their Congressional Representatives to demand passage of the Local Community Radio Act. On National Call-in Day, we will be hosting an open house and call center in our Philadelphia office, so please join us if you are in the area.

The Summer of Action continues in August, when there will be coordinated visits to Representatives’ home offices across the country to demand more local radio.
 

Tune In: We Are Ready Now Radio

From July 16th to 18th, Prometheans will descend on Detroit to participate in the 11th annual Allied Media Conference. For those of you who can’t make it, we will be broadcasting live from the conference. You can tune in via webstream, with will also be linked from the AMC’s website. The broadcast will feature programs hosted by Radio Rootz youth from NYC, Bump Lyricists from the Bay, Organizers with Project South, Youth with D-towns own Detroit Summer, your favorite folks from the Prometheus Radio Project, and more. There will also be a one-hour program, featuring conference highlights, available for you to air on your station following the conference.

Support Community Radio During the Honduran Coup

On June 30, 2009, a military coup ousted the democratically elected government of Honduras and took over many of the country’s mainstream media outlets. In response, decentralized networks of community media are emerging as the essential communication infrastructure for disseminating information, providing public forums, political mobilizing, and self-defense.


Friends of Prometheus, the Primary Communications Project, are in Honduras working with La Voz Lenca, a community radio station located in La Esperanza and run by COPINH. Andy Gunn, the Prometheus Radio Project's Technical Contractor, just return from helping PCP with the project, and will provide an account of his trip for the Prometheus site in the next several weeks. Top Ten Problems with HD Radio

On July 6, Prometheus filed comments with the FCC to oppose a proposed power increase for digital radio signals (aka "HD radio"). But since most people haven't heard enough about digital radio to even weigh in on the issue, this month we've put together our Top Ten Problems with HD Radio.

Hearing Date Set for Low Power Community Radio Act

The Road To LPFM Victory

  Image We are thrilled to report that the Communications, Technology and Internet Subcommittee of the US House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee hold a hearing on HR 1147, the Local Community Radio Act, on Thursday, June 11, at 10 am.
 
  This is a thrilling and critical step toward passage of the Local Community Radio Act, a battle that Prometheus has been fighting for a number of years. With the passage of HR 1147, there will be space on the dial for hundreds, potentially thousands more non-commercial Low Power FM radio stations. At Prometheus, we are eager to get back to the work of building more LPFM stations and getting more local and progressive voices on the airwaves!

LPFM Stations Saved by DC Circuit Court Ruling

In an important victory for low power radio, an appeals court ruled in favor of the FCC's right to protect LPFMs from encroachment by full power stations. The DC Circuit Court dismissed a lawsuit, filed by the National Association of Broadcasters, that sought to prevent the FCC in protecting low power stations from interference.

We Are Ready Now Radio

Prometheus Broadcasting Live at the Allied Media Conference

From July 16 to 18, Prometheans will be heading to Detroit to participate in the dopest conference ever, the 11th annual Allied Media Conference. In partnership with People’s Production House, we will host a two-day live radio broadcast and webcast as part of the “Laboratory for media-based solutions to the matrix of life-threatening problems we face” workshop. We will be also be teaching people how to solder a transmitter, demystifying the circuits that control people's access to radio technologies.

AMC Fundraisers

Detroit, home of the Allied Media Conference, is long way away from our home in West Philly, and we don’t have to tell you about those gas prices. . . So, to offset the cost of registration, housing, and travel, Prometheus is holding, not one, but two blowout summer fundraisers!

Supporting Artists at a Cost

So, who exactly gets paid when you hear Patsy Cline singing "Crazy" on the radio? It's not who you think—with the current laws on the books, the songwriter, Willie Nelson in this case, and his publisher are compensated, while the estate of Patsy Cline receives no pay for the performance. The Performance Rights Act would correct this weird state of affairs by requiring radio stations to pay a fee to compensate performers for the use of their music over the air. READ ON to see why there is such a strong need for performance fees in the US right now, and then let us know what you think. Do you support this bill? How could it be changed to be fair for performers, but also fair to small low power stations?

Closing Loopholes for Rural Radio

ImageIn an exciting Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, the FCC has finally recognized the systematic abuse of its policies by large corporations and has proposed changes that will protect small rural community stations. Will they really solve the problems that have finally been recognized, or will these proposed changes create similar loopholes that larger corporations will continue to exploit in the name of localism?
